   Ngoni Dancers. Source: Facebook The Ngoni people primarily live in the Ruvuma region of the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. They have a significant presence in multiple countries across southern Africa. They originally hailed from the southeastern region of present-day Zambia and embarked on a series of migrations and conquests during the 19th century.  Here’s a brief summary of the Ngoni people. Family Structure The Ngoni of Tanzania are descendants of a group led by Chief Zwangendaba. They were in small independent states with central administration based on patrilineal succession. Settlements were characterized by large compact villages built close to one another. Each village would have up to 3000 inhabitants. Families were nuclear, headed by a man. They form one of the largest Bantu-speaking communities in the country, with diverse subgroups such as the Bukusu, Maragoli, Wanga, and Idakho, among others. Here is a summary of the Abaluyha community. Family Concept The man was the head of the family in the Luyha household. A family consisted of a husband, wife, and children. However, stepchildren, or adopted kids and relatives, were considered part of the household. Totems In the mid-twentieth century, there were at least 750 Abaluyia. The different clans had animals, birds, plants totem, and names of their forefathers. Subgroup (locality) They are divided into 18 other sub-tribes with different dialects altogether. Some of the sub-tribes are split into smaller groups, like the case of the Bukusu people.   South Africa commemorated the 30th anniversary of the end of apartheid and the dawn of its democracy with a ceremony in the capital on Saturday.  The event, which featured a 21-gun salute and the display of the nation's multicolored flag, was led by President Cyril Ramaphosa at a large gathering in the gardens of the government buildings in Pretoria.  Ramaphosa also addressed the ceremony as leader of the African National Congress (ANC), the party that played a key role in liberating South Africa's Black majority from nearly 50 years of oppressive apartheid rule.   File image of the entrance of Kitum cave Kitum Cave, situated in Mount Elgon National Park in Kenya, gained notoriety after two visitors contracted the deadly Marburg virus and subsequently died.  Research indicates that the virus thrives in caves and mines where animals like Rousettus colony bats leave traces of their presence.  Humans exposed to such environments for extended periods may contract the virus, as was the case with the French nationals—a man who died in 1980 and a boy in 1987—shortly after visiting Kitum Cave. These two deaths prompted investigations, including a visit from the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease (USAMRIID) to ascertain the cause of the fatalities.  Surprisingly, the research did not find any signs of the Marburg virus at the time, leading to a discrepancy with earlier reports attributing the deaths to the virus.
